Michael J. Fox, 64, is gearing up to release his latest memoir, Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum, on October 14. Co-authored with Nelle Fortenberry, the book revisits one of the most hectic periods of Fox’s career, when he was simultaneously filming season three of Family Ties and the first Back to the Future movie in 1985.
On September 10, Michael J. Fox shared an excerpt from the memoir on Instagram, recalling the intense work schedule that left him juggling multiple identities.
“During three long months, I was Alex, I was Marty, and I was Mike. That’s two too many,” he wrote. “In order to complete my work, at least two of them had to go, and Mike was the odd man out.”
Fox added that the 20-hour days filming Family Ties by day and Back to the Future by night left little time for him to simply be himself: “It has taken me four decades to piece it all together.”
Fans quickly filled the comments section with excitement. Many shared how much they admired Fox’s work and expressed eagerness to read more about this defining chapter in his life.
The actor, who has already authored three books, explained earlier this year why he felt now was the right time for another memoir. Speaking to People magazine in March, Fox said the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future had him reflecting on his younger days.
“This book has basically become a time machine for me,” he said. “But unlike the DeLorean, there’s plenty of room for anyone who’d like to climb in for the ride.”
