Pokemon GO Level 80 Update: Launch date, XP celebration event, key features, and Ultra Box revealed

TECHNOLOGY

Niantic has announced Pokémon GO’s biggest leveling update yet, raising the maximum Trainer level from 50 to 80 starting October 15, 2025. The overhaul, timed ahead of the game’s 10th anniversary, will introduce a rebalanced progression system, improved rewards, and new research tasks, making leveling “more fun, rewarding, and achievable.” While Pokémon will continue to max out at level 50 with no changes to Combat Power Multipliers, Trainers will be able to advance further than ever before.

Leveling will be faster from 1–80 with new tasks for 71–80, and some Trainers may auto-level on October 15 based on past XP, with no progress lost.

Ahead of the update, legacy rewards tied to levels 40–50 will be retired on October 14. Trainers will receive commemorative medals reflecting their highest pre-update level, while exclusive items such as the Level 50 Jacket will remain for those who unlocked them.

To help players prepare, Niantic will host an XP Celebration event from August 25 to October 14, featuring 2× Catch XP, extra rewards for Raids and Max Battles, and a special Timed Research questline. Research questline worth over 7 million XP. Niantic is also releasing an XP Celebration Ultra Box in the web store for $9.99 to boost progression.

With this update, Niantic says it hopes to re-engage long-time fans and returning players, calling the expansion one of the most transformative changes in Pokémon GO’s history.
