Carlos Alcaraz turned heads at the US Open before even stepping onto the court, debuting a dramatic buzz cut that drew comparisons to David Beckham’s iconic look from 2000. The tournament’s official account joined in the fun, posting a video of the Spaniard with the caption: “Welcome back, David Beckham 2000.”

During practice, golf legend Rory McIlroy playfully rubbed Alcaraz’s head and asked, “Why this?” The world No. 2 laughed it off, saying: “Just got a haircut that I struggled with. I mean, I had to start fresh. I like it… it’s good.”

Not everyone was impressed. Close friend Frances Tiafoe didn’t mince words, calling the haircut “horrible” and “terrible,” though he joked it might at least make Alcaraz more “aerodynamic.” Still, Tiafoe made clear his support, adding: “At the end of the day, it’s Carlos, and that’s my guy.”

Carlos Alcaraz quickly shifted the spotlight from his headline-grabbing haircut to his performance on court, delivering a straight-sets victory over American big-server Reilly Opelka. The Spaniard looked composed throughout the clash on Arthur Ashe Stadium, sealing a 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 win to advance to the second round of the US Open.

The 21-year-old second seed is chasing his second US Open title and sixth Grand Slam crown overall. After last year’s surprising early exit in the second round, Alcaraz will be determined to avoid another upset as he continues his quest for silverware at Flushing Meadows.
