MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers honored legendary broadcaster Bob Uecker on Sunday in an emotional pregame ceremony at American Family Field, celebrating his 54-year career behind the mic and his lasting bond with the city before his death in January at age 90. Hosted by Bob Costas, the tribute drew Hall of Famers George Brett, Ted Simmons and Robin Yount, with Brewers players wearing special “UECK” jerseys and Uecker’s family joining in a ceremonial first pitch.
The broadcast wing at American Family Field was renamed the Bob Uecker Broadcast Center, with memorabilia and tributes displayed throughout the concourses in his honor. Fans, many in plaid jackets or shirts with his famous “Juuuust a bit outside” catchphrase, packed the sellout crowd. Former Brewers owner Bud Selig, current owner Mark Attanasio, and players past and present remembered Uecker as both a national icon—thanks to Major League, Mr. Belvedere, and countless talk show appearances—and a Hall of Fame-caliber announcer whose wit never overshadowed his baseball insight.
Costas recalled Uecker’s poignant final sign-off after last season’s playoff loss, calling it “as poignant a valedictory as any broadcaster has ever given.” Said Attanasio: “Nobody would have enjoyed this more. Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio reflected, “I believe he’s still with us, but I really miss him.”
