Longtime New York Rep. Jerry Nadler says he will not seek reelection

Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler, the longest-serving member of New York’s congressional delegation, announced Monday he will not seek reelection in 2024. Nadler, 78, told The New York Times it was time for “generational change,” saying a younger leader “can maybe do better, can maybe help us more.”

Nadler has represented Manhattan since 1992 and served as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee from 2019 to 2023. He played a central role in introducing the first impeachment articles against former President Donald Trump and was a driving force behind the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, signed into law in 2022.

The announcement follows the entry of 26-year-old Democrat Liam Elkind into the race as a primary challenger, who had urged Nadler to retire while praising his decades of service.

Tributes poured in Monday, with New York Gov.New York Gov. Kathy Hochul praised Rep. Jerry Nadler as “a champion, a fighter, and a trusted voice for New Yorkers.”

New York’s 12th Congressional District, represented by Rep. Jerry Nadler’s district includes Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Upper East Side, and Midtown. His retirement adds to a growing list of Democratic lawmakers stepping down ahead of the 2024 elections.
