Emma Stone has opened up about her ex-boyfriend Andrew Garfield and her time working on The Amazing Spider-Man films, almost ten years after their relationship ended.
In a new feature for Vogue’s Life in Looks series, the Oscar-winning actor, 36, reflected on her breakthrough role as Gwen Stacy in the 2012 blockbuster, where she first met Garfield, who played Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield began dating during The Amazing Spider-Man in 2011 and reportedly split in 2015.
“I really loved working on Spider-Man,” Stone said, looking back on the experience with warmth.
She explained that beyond the film itself, it was the people she met and worked with that made the project so special for her.
“I loved everyone I worked with. I met Andrew there.” She also expressed admiration for other co-stars, including Sally Field and director Marc Webb, adding: “It was really a special time in my life.”
Stone explained that, for her, films are defined less by the projects themselves and more by“ the people she worked alongside.Stone explained that what stays with her most from filming isn’t the movie itself, but the people she worked alongside. “The recurring theme is always the people, and I carry only the fondest memories of the whole experience,” she said.
The only part she didn’t enjoy, she admitted, was the relentless press tours. Recalling a promotional run that spanned nine countries in just two weeks, Stone said: “I don’t really know how people do it… I felt truly psychotic the entire time.”
Garfield has also occasionally touched on their past relationship. In a 2024 interview with Esquire, he responded to a popular fan theory that Damien Chazelle’s 2016 musical La La Land, which starred Stone opposite Ryan Gosling, was loosely inspired by his and Stone’s relationship. Garfield dismissed the speculation, saying: “I guess people need something to believe. Garfield made it clear he values his privacy, saying: “I have never, and I won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone, ever.”
Director Chazelle also rejected the theory, telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2016 that the film was not based on real events, but rather on the poetic struggles of dreamers trying to make it in Los Angeles.
Since their time together, both actors have gone on to find success and move forward in their personal lives. Stone married writer-director Dave McCary in 2020, and they welcomed their daughter, Louise Jean, the following year in March 2021.
Garfield, meanwhile, has continued a varied acting career while remaining private about his personal life.
