West Nile virus found in bird, mosquitoes in Solano County

HEALTH

(KRON) — Health officials have confirmed the first West Nile virus cases of 2025 in Solano County after a bird and mosquitoes tested positive earlier this month.

The Solano County Mosquito Abatement District reported that a bird collected near Goodyear Road in Benicia on Aug. 15 tested positive. Just days later, on Aug. 18, mosquitoes from the same area were also found to be carrying the virus.
The City of Benicia urged residents to take precautions, advising them to inspect their properties for standing water to reduce mosquito breeding and the risk of bites.

Residents are encouraged to use EPA-registered repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, or IR3535, and to maintain clean bird baths, pet bowls, and outdoor containers. Repairing leaky faucets, avoiding over-watering, and ensuring window and door screens are intact are also recommended.

While most people infected with West Nile virus show no symptoms, some may experience fever, headaches, and body aches. In severe cases, West Nile virus may require hospitalization and can be fatal, though rarely.. Older adults and individuals with chronic health conditions face the highest risk.
