Elon Musk Teases Major Upgrade to Tesla's Full Self-Driving Tech

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, announced that the company is close to launching an upgraded version of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk stated that Tesla is currently training a new FSD model that features nearly 10 times more parameters and significant improvements in video compression.

According to Musk, the upgraded version could be made available to the public as early as the end of next month, provided testing proceeds smoothly.

The increase in parameters typically signifies a more advanced AI system—capable of understanding complex driving environments more accurately. With enhanced data processing from its cameras and sensors, this update aims to improve how Tesla vehicles interpret and navigate real-world conditions.

Tesla’s self-driving technology has faced regulatory examination in the past due to safety concerns. In October of last year, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) began reviewing Tesla’s FSD systems following multiple crash reports. These incidents reportedly occurred in situations involving limited visibility, such as fog, sun glare, or dust in the air.

One fatality and another injury were reportedly linked to FSD being active during such conditions.

Despite the promise of technological improvement, Tesla’s stock has faced challenges—falling nearly 19% year-to-date as of this past Tuesday.
