American Eagle Outfitters has responded to criticism surrounding its recent fall campaign starring actress Sydney Sweeney, emphasizing that the focus “has always been on the jeans.”
The controversy emerged after the campaign’s tagline, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans,” was interpreted by some as a double entendre referencing genetics, which led to allegations of racial insensitivity and undertones of “white supremacy.”
The backlash intensified following a promotional video where Sweeney spoke about traits passed down through genetics—like hair and eye color—before highlighting her blue eyes and saying, “My jeans are blue.”
The brand took to social media to clarify its stance and reinforce the intention behind the campaign.
“Her jeans. Her story.”We’re proud to highlight how individuals express themselves through AE jeans — with style, confidence, and authenticity.Great jeans look good on everyone.”
While Sweeney’s promotional content has since been replaced with a new model—prompting some social media users to label it as “damage control”—she has not made any public statement regarding the controversy. The Emmy-nominated actress, known for her performances in Euphoria and The White Lotus, was featured in numerous posts before the campaign pivot.
