In a surprising move, Jason Momoa has bid farewell to his legendary beard as he gears up to return to the big screen in Dune: Part Three.
The 45-year-old actor stunned fans on July 30 by posting a video on Instagram where he shaved off his well-known facial hair using an electric razor. This is the official kickoff for Dune 3,” Momoa declared in the video.. Admiring his clean-shaven look, he joked, “Ah, only for you, Denis,” addressing Dune director Denis Villeneuve.
The upcoming installment of the Dune saga is currently in production and is expected to hit theaters in December 2026. Returning stars Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet will also appear in the film, along with a fresh addition to the cast — Momoa’s 16-year-old son, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa.
“I Hate It!” – Momoa’s Reaction to His New Look
Midway through the beard removal, Momoa burst into laughter, clearly feeling awkward about his changing appearance. Once fully shaved, he stared into the camera and admitted, “Damn it, I hate it!”
The Aquaman actor revealed he hadn’t shaved in six years, originally growing the beard around the same time he launched his eco-conscious Hawaiian water brand, Mananalu.
While cleaning off the final hairs, Momoa took a moment to spotlight the mission behind his company — working to eliminate single-use plastic bottles, clean up oceans, and promote locally sourced water to reduce carbon emissions.
Behind the Scenes of Dune: Part Three
Fans who remember Momoa’s role as the fierce Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones or the heroic Aquaman may find his bare face a rare sight. However, in the first Dune movie (2021), his character Duncan Idaho was seen clean-shaven, making this look more in line with the franchise’s aesthetic.
Though not many details have been released about Dune 3, Momoa has expressed pride over his son joining the cast.
“He’s about to get a real taste of the working world,” Momoa said. “He landed this role entirely through his own efforts,” Momoa said proudly. I didn’t help him — and I’m proud of that.”
The proud father continued: “At 16, he’s sitting across from Denis Villeneuve and holding his own. At his age, I wouldn’t have been able to do what he’s doing now,” he added. When I was 19, I was on Baywatch. He’s doing something far more challenging.”
