Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) on Monday filed a resolution to censure Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and remove her from her committee assignments, citing what she called “vile comments” following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Mace accused Omar of mocking Kirk’s killing and “all but blaming him for his own assassination.” In remarks to Zeteo on Sept. 11, Omar dismissed tributes to Kirk, calling him a spreader of “hateful rhetoric,” a “reprehensible human being,” and a “stochastic terrorist.” She later amplified those comments in a video on social media criticizing Democrats and celebrities for “normalizing” him.
Under Mace’s resolution, Omar would be required to stand in the well of the House chamber for a formal reprimand and would be stripped of her posts on the Budget and Education and Workforce Committees.
If approved, Omar would be the 29th lawmaker in U.S. history to be censured, continuing a recent pattern of high-profile censures in the House.
