Lorne Michaels opens up on the future on SNL in Trump’s America: ‘Denouncing him doesn’t work’

ENTERTAINMENT

Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels has insisted that Donald Trump’s presidency will not chill political comedy. In an interview with Puck, Michaels, 80, downplayed the idea that Stephen Colbert’s firing from CBS was an act of censorship, attributing it instead to financial and audience considerations, particularly the split between traditional TV viewers and online clip audiences.

Michaels acknowledged Trump’s media power and controversial politics but argued that denouncing him “doesn’t work.” He stressed that political comedy remains viable, noting that audiences find comedians like SNL’s Michael Che funny regardless of politics. “Michaels said he had been assured that other late-night hosts, including Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, are safe from any potential pressure by the Trump administration.”

Looking ahead to SNL’s 51st season, Michaels teased major shake-ups while confirming James Austin Johnson would continue portraying Trump. He emphasized the importance of maintaining focus on the show without unnecessary disruptions, citing special appearances from former cast members during Season 50 celebrations.
