Mariners – Athletics Game Preview

SPORTS

The Mariners return home licking their wounds after a miserable road trip that dented—but didn’t completely sink—their playoff hopes, and with the Wild Card race heating up thanks to the Royals, Guardians, and a suddenly surging Houston team, Seattle badly needs to reset against the cellar-dwelling A’s. Oakland hands the ball to Luis Morales, their top pitching prospect whose rocket rise from signing out of Cuba in 2023 to debuting in 2025 has come with plenty of growing pains; his stuff is electric but his command still wobbly, though he did manage five innings of one-run ball in his last start. The Mariners will need discipline at the plate against Morales’ erratic command, while the A’s aim to strike early behind the return of Jacob Wilson and a hard-hitting lineup capable of flipping the game with one swing. Bryan Woo takes the mound for Seattle, tasked with cooling down Oakland’s big-swinging lineup and helping his club get back in the win column. Lineup-wise, Luke Raley replaces Dominic Canzone, who remains sidelined after taking a pitch off the wrist (x-rays negative, so the outlook is good). Meanwhile, the A’s made several roster moves before this series, most notably reinstating Wilson, and they also bring back Joey Estes—yes, the same Joey Estes whose rehab stint turned chaotic when he hit Victor Robles twice. First pitch is 7:10 PM at T-Mobile Park on drone show night, which promises to delight fans but frustrate beat writers; TV coverage is on ROOT Sports with Aaron On the broadcast, Aaron Goldsmith and Angie Mentink will be joined by Ryan Rowland-Smith as the field reporter, with Rick Rizzs and Gary Hill Jr. handling the radio call. handle the call on 710 AM.
